There are a number of apps for mobile phones that help protect user privacy and data integrity. The following list, though not exhaustive, provides links to a number of mobile apps, categorized by function, that the ISC Project finds effective for protecting various aspects of mobile users’ privacy.
Internet security (Antivirus and more)
A free security app and antivirus that protects devices from viruses and malware. It includes other features such as a locator for misplaced cell phones, data theft protection, and a “blacklist” option for unwanted contacts.
A free security app that offers protection and tools to help keep iPhone, iPad, and iPod devices secure. It includes a malicious process scanner, identity protection tool, and comprehensive device locator.
A free antivirus for Android that secures devices against phishing, malware, spyware, and viruses. It also protects data on devices with anti-theft features such as a locator and remote lock and memory wipe options.
A free, open source circumvention tool from Psiphon Inc. that utilizes VPN, SSH and HTTP Proxy technology to provide uncensored access to Internet content. You can choose between browser mode, in which only your web browser uses circumvention, or VPN (whole-device) mode, which tunnels all traffic on the mobile device.
There are other commercial VPN options, such as Private Internet Access. You can subscribe to a Private Internet Access account and configure it for Android with the Android client, or on iPhone by using the L2TP VPN Setup.
A free proxy android app that empowers other apps to use the Internet more securely. Orbot uses Tor to encrypt Internet traffic and then hides it by bouncing through a series of computers around the world. Use it with Orweb for the most anonymous way to access any website, even if it’s normally blocked, monitored, or on the hidden web. For experts, Root Mode Orbot can be configured to transparently proxy all of your Internet traffic (except UDP) through Tor, and you can also choose the specific apps that you want to use through Tor.
A free, open source app from iiLab that turns your mobile phone into a secret alarm for when you’re in trouble. Please note that this app is a Beta Application. It can only facilitate emergency assistance when a person’s contacts are in a position to act.
A free, open source app for private, secure messaging between peopleusing Facebook Chat, Google Talk, Hangouts, Jabber, Dukgo, and more. It is available for Android and iOS. ChatSecure is also compatible with Mac with Adium, Linux with Jitsi, and Windows with Pidgin.
A free, open source app from Open Whisper Systems that locally encrypts all SMS so that if your phone is lost, your messages will be safe. Messages to other TextSecure users are encrypted over the air, protecting your communication in transit.
A free and open source Android app from Open Whisper Systems that provides end-to-end encryption for your Voice over IP calls, securing your conversations from eavesdroppers. RedPhone uses your normal phone number to make and receive calls, so you don’t need yet another identifier.
This is the iOS version of RedPhone. It provides the same functionality and end-to-end encryption for your Voice over IP calls.
Password Management Tools
A mobile version of KeePass Password Safe for Android. It provides secure password storage on your Android device. It is compatible with KeePass 1.X and 2.X.
A mobile version of KeePass Password Safe for iOS. It provides secure password storage on your iOS device. It is compatible with KeePass 1.X and 2.X.
Android Privacy Guard (APG) is a free app for Android devices that allows users to encrypt, decrypt, and sign email messages. APG is open source and its goal is to provide OpenPGP functions similar to GnuPG. K9 is a free and open source email client for Android that integrates with APG.
For iOS: iPGMail is a low-cost encryption app that uses the OpenPGP standard. It allows the user to create and manage both public and private PGP keys, as well as send and receive PGP encrypted messages.
This free app from Apple helps you locate any missing Apple devices associated with your Apple ID on a map. In addition, the app allows you to remotely lock your device, play a sound, display a message, or wipe all of the data.
This free App from Google helps you locate Android devices associated with your Google account, reset your device’s screen lock PIN, and remotely wipe all data on the device.
